The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA) is a U.S. federal law that protects victims of domestic violence in housing matters—such as allowing lease termination and prohibiting discrimination by landlords based on a victim’s housing history related to abuse. VAWA applies to tax credit, and other affordable housing properties.
Texas law provides lease termination rights for survivors of family violence, sexual assault, and stalking, and outlines ways rental property owners can support these individuals. The proof required, and the type of length of notice given, varies depending on the basis for the termination request. This class will provide an overview of the applicable laws, and provide best practices for responding to requests from tenants based on these protections.
